Greens leader Adam Bandt has conceded defeat in the Melbourne electorate after a 15-year tenure, despite receiving the highest primary vote in the seat. In his concession speech, Bandt attributed his loss to the redistribution of electoral boundaries, a significant Liberal-to-Labor swing influenced by fears of Peter Dutton's leadership, and crucially, the flow of Liberal and One Nation preferences to Labor candidate Sarah Whitty. The loss marks the end of a political career that saw Bandt climb what he called an "Everest" multiple times by previously overcoming the combined forces of both major parties.
During his address, Bandt highlighted key achievements including marriage equality legislation, dental care inclusion in Medicare for children, and implementing what he described as "world-leading climate legislation" through a carbon pricing mechanism. He urged the media to treat the climate crisis "as if our country was being invaded" rather than as a political issue, while delivering a pointed message that the Greens movement remains "unstoppable" despite this setback. Bandt noted the Greens had achieved their highest-ever vote nationally and now hold the sole balance of power in the Senate.
The Federal Court has imposed a $750,000 penalty on HCF Life Insurance Company following a ruling that the insurer's pre-existing condition terms were misleading to consumers. The case, brought by the Australian Securities and Investments Commission (ASIC), centered on four policies under HCF Life's 'Recover' range of products where the contract language incorrectly suggested the company could deny coverage even when customers were unaware of pre-existing conditions, contradicting protections provided under Section 47 of the Insurance Contracts Act.
Justice Jackman described the violations as "objectively serious," noting that the misrepresentations appeared in product disclosure statements that consumers rightfully expected to contain accurate information about their coverage. ASIC Deputy Chair Sarah Court emphasized that the ruling serves as an important message to insurers about their responsibility to provide accurate information to consumers. As part of the settlement, HCF Life has agreed to publish corrective disclosures on its website and has already sent corrective notices to affected policyholders.
Senator Jacinta Nampijinpa-Price left the National Party to join the Liberal Party in a notable political realignment, so exposing growing differences inside Australia's conservative coalition. Disappointingly, National MP Kevin Hogan noted the death of a significant person who had been "a very important part of our team" since he joined Parliament three years ago. The action follows News Corp Australia's revelations implying Nampijinpa-Price might be appointed deputy Liberal leader alongside candidate for leadership Angus Taylor
The timing of this political change is especially noteworthy since it aligns with more general debates on the Coalition's future framework, with former Liberal Premier Colin Barnett supporting party merger while National MP Matt Canavan has suggested a possible division.
Recent election results show clear variations in regional and metropolitan voter mood; National Party MPs kept consistent support while Liberal candidates battled in cities. According to the Australian Financial Review, this development coincides with a pivotal point when both sides are reviewing their policy stances after the federal election last week.
